windows format dialog UI

Hey everyone, remember that super basic formatting tool in Windows? Believe it or not, it was supposed to be a quick fix almost 30 years ago!

A former Microsoft dev named Dave Plummer spilled the beans on social media about how this whole thing went down. Back in the day, they were bringing all the fancy features from Windows 95 to the new Windows NT, but formatting needed a little extra love. So, Dave grabbed a pen and paper, jotted down all the formatting options (file system, labels, the whole shebang), and whipped up a simple tool to get things going. The idea? Hold the fort until a more polished version arrived.

Well, that "more polished version" never showed up!  Fast forward to today's Windows 11, and you're still using Dave's original creation. Fun fact: the 32GB limit on FAT volume sizes? That might also be Dave's doing! He had to decide how much wiggle room to leave in the system, and that choice stuck. (Though technically, you can use bigger FAT drives with some extra tools.)

So, why hasn't Microsoft changed this relic? Maybe it's a case of "if it works, don't mess with it!" ‍♀️  There are definitely other parts of Windows that could use a refresh, but hey, at least formatting is familiar, right?

Guess what? Fancy never showed up! Fast forward to today's Windows 11, and you're still rocking Dave's original creation. Pretty cool, right?

This even explains the 32GB limit on FAT drives – that might be Dave's handiwork too! He had to decide on some technical stuff, and that choice stuck around. (Although, you can use bigger FAT drives with some extra help.)

So, why hasn't Microsoft changed it? Maybe it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" ‍Let's be honest, Windows has some features stuck in the past, but formatting is thankfully user-friendly, even for newbies!

Looking to format a drive in Windows? This trusty old tool (thanks, Dave!) is still there to help. Just search for "format disk" and you'll find it.

Want to learn more about FAT drives and their size limits? A quick web search for "FAT volume size" will give you all the details. (We snuck some SEO keywords in there for you!)

Totally hear you on the ancient Windows format tool! Like, who knew it was basically a 30-year-old placeholder?

Seems kinda crazy that Microsoft never got around to updating it, right? Part of me thinks they should've given it a makeover by now, but hey, if it ain't broke... ‍♀️ Maybe they just figured most folks don't format drives that often anymore, so why fix what works?

Although, wouldn't a little refresh be nice? A new look, some clearer icons, maybe even a fun Easter egg for the original creator (shoutout to Dave!) Microsoft could totally spruce it up without messing with the core functionality.

So, yeah, interesting quirk of Windows history for sure. Maybe one day they'll give that dusty dialog box some love, but for now, it's still chugging along! Just gotta search for "format disk" if you ever need it.
